About Code Decoder
Code Decoder gives drivers a quick, plain-English answer when the check engine light comes on: what the code means, and whether it is reasonable to keep driving.
Who runs the site
Code Decoder is a small independent project. It is not run by a repair shop, a mechanic, or a car manufacturer.
How the entries were made
The entries were compiled with the help of automated tools (AI), based on the standard generic OBD-II code definitions and general automotive knowledge. They have not yet been reviewed code by code by a licensed mechanic. Repair costs are rough US estimates and vary widely by car and location. If you find a mistake, please email us so it can be corrected.
How verdicts are decided
- Red: the fault may cause serious damage or loss of control, such as overheating, low oil pressure, or a possible stall. Misfire codes need extra care: if the check engine light is flashing, stop driving.
- Yellow: the car can usually be driven for a short time, but the problem should be checked soon. This includes safety-system warnings such as airbag faults, where the car drives but protection may be reduced. Unclear cases are marked yellow, not green.
- Green: minor problems, mostly fuel-vapor leaks (such as a loose gas cap), where driving is usually fine for a while but the cause should still be found.
Limitations
This site gives general information, not a diagnosis. Your car may have other faults that change the risk. If the check engine light is flashing, or the car overheats, runs rough, loses power, or behaves strangely, stop driving safely and get professional help. Always follow your owner's manual.
